Watch Water Resistance in Nepal: What 30m, 50m and 100m Really Mean
The number on the dial is not a diving depth
Most people see “WR 30m” or “50m” on a watch and assume the watch can go 30 or 50 metres underwater. It cannot. These numbers come from lab tests under still, controlled pressure. Real life is messier: a hand moving through water, a hot shower or a splash from a tap creates far more pressure than the number suggests.
What each rating means in daily life
30m (3 ATM): Safe against sweat, rain and accidental splashes. Not for swimming or showering.
50m (5 ATM): Handles heavier splashes and brief contact with water. Fine for washing your hands, but still not ideal for regular swimming.
100m (10 ATM): Suitable for swimming and snorkelling, as long as the crown is pushed in or screwed down.
200m and above: Built for serious water sports and diving.
“Water resistant” does not mean “waterproof”. The rubber seals that block water wear out over time, so a watch that was sealed when new may not be a few years later.
Why Nepal’s monsoon matters
From June to September, a sudden downpour while riding a scooter or walking to the office is normal. A 30m watch will survive getting rained on. The bigger risk is humidity: moisture slowly entering through a loose crown or ageing gasket can fog the glass from the inside. Once you see fog, get the watch checked straight away, because corrosion starts quickly.
Five habits that protect your watch
- Never press buttons or pull the crown underwater. This is how most seals fail.
- Avoid hot showers, saunas and steam rooms. Heat expands the seals and lets steam in, even on higher-rated watches.
- Rinse with fresh water after the sea or a pool. Chlorine and salt damage gaskets.
- Choose silicone or metal straps for wet days. Leather soaks up water, smells and cracks.
- Get seals tested every one to two years if you use the watch around water often.
Quick FAQ
Can I wear a 30m watch while washing my hands?
Usually yes, but avoid hot water and soap, which can weaken seals over time.
Where do I find the rating?
On the dial, the case back, or the product description. If it isn’t stated, assume the watch is only splash-proof.
